REMOVAL

Carbon sequestration and emission reduction project in the agricultural sector. El Mesto S.L. is the managing entity of the Hacienda El Mesto farm. This is a flagship farm for the traditional olive groves in the province of Jaén. The farm also represents a commitment to the technification of agriculture and a sustainable use of resources with particular care and respect for the environment. A total of 1,091 productive hectares comprise the farm, divided into approximately three equal parts: traditional, intensive and hedgerow farming systems. The traditional olive grove is made up of olive trees of the Picual variety that are more than 100 years old and that have high ecological value. The project has quantified and verified 36,484 tCO2eq of soil and biomass net carbon removals since 2018. Given the historical downward trayectory of this net carbon balance, the farm has been able to generate a total of 28,046 ex-post credits according to the Trinity Natural Capital Markets standard and the Cultiva Carbono project methodology. The property consists of several enclaves within the crop itself, as well as areas of unproductive and forested land. These areas complement an estate of great diversity that is also used as a hunting ground. The small managed forest masses in the unproductive areas allow for the interconnectivity of the forest and agricultural ecosystems, promoting the development and conservation of a diverse range of species. This supports the protected natural areas of the Natura 2000 network with which it shares its borders. This commitment is also embodied in the conduct and management of a Biodiversity Action Plan that is evaluated annually.
